Landscape looking north

The Fort is visible in the very middle of the picture, about two thirds of the way up in a clearing; the Tuscarawas river is overflowing its banks in the foreground. The ground cover has browned off for the winter the forest is made up of mostly leafless trees with some evergreens.

Wide view looking NE

The terrain is modeled from Digital Elevation Maps and is a very accurate model of reality - These extremely wide views take up lots of computer resources and we are limited to doing only a few still shots like this or perhaps one animation where we fly the camera in over the treetops to a close view of the fort.

Fort overlooks the river

Looking east, we see the fort is on the elevated side of the river and looks out over a lowlands area that is partially flooded by the winter rains and runoff. The fort sits on the outer bank of a large bend in the river which does not exist today, having been moved eastward and straightened to flow beside the Interstate.

Looking west

The landscape primarily affords realistic backdrops to the close-ups of the fort itself. Since this view was rendered, I have added a path leading to the hospital ( which can be seen in the next view to the right.) The cleared area is full of stumps.

View to the south

Looking due south we can see the river receeding in the distance. Also note the hill a few hundred yards south; it is covered in trees today, as I recall, at the end of the Ft Laurens park area.

Looking SW

This view shows the water gate and the zig-zag pickets leading down the slope. A sandy flat by the water allows easy access for the soldiers. This side of the fort needs no ditches, the river bank slope being quite enough.

Inside the fort

The landscape provides nice backdrops. The flag can be changed to any type you like -- it looks nice having a flag; just pick the most likely one and use it as a point of discussion in the presentation (explain you don't know which flag actually was flown.)

Looking NE

From just above the SW elevated platform, we are looking across the fort and up the river valley. (We'll remove the improperly dressed figures before any renderings)

Wide view looking NE

The trees in this winter forest are mostly leafless deciduous trees mixed with some evergreens and a few trees with some brown leaves remaining. There are so many trees in this forest that 2Gigabytes of RAM is not enough to render this scene easily. You probably won't need to do much with a wide view like this, but I think it does show a pretty good representation of what the landscape looked like in 1788.

Looking NW

This overview of the fort and river is nice, showing the small stream that flowed into the Tuscarawas a few yards north of the fort.

A still picture like this can be enhanced a bit in photoshop to eliminate the "tiling" of the ground textures - what's good at close-up does not always work far away. For moving video shots, the best compromise is as good as you can do.

Looking SE
